Bollywood Bids Farewell to Suneil Anand, Son of Icon Dev Anand, at 70

In a poignant moment for Bollywood, Suneil Anand, the beloved son of legendary actor Dev Anand, passed away at the age of 70 on July 28, 2026. This heart-wrenching news was confirmed by his niece, who expressed the family’s wish for privacy during this somber time.

Suneil was born in the picturesque city of Zurich, Switzerland, in 1956. His arrival into the world was perfectly timed with his parents’ journey to the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where he became the festival’s youngest delegate.

From Business to Bollywood

A man of many talents, Suneil earned a degree in Business Administration from American University in Washington, DC. Yet, the pull of cinema was irresistible. Joining forces with his legendary father, he embarked on various directorial ventures in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

His acting debut was nothing short of a family affair, stepping into the limelight with the film Anand Aur Anand, crafted under his father’s watchful eye. He further explored the silver screen with roles in Car Thief, under Sameer Malkan’s direction, and Main Tere Liye, helmed by his uncle Vijay Anand. Suneil even ventured into directing with the martial arts film Master, showcasing his diverse creative flair.

Beyond Acting: A Passion for Filmmaking

Despite the commercial performance of these films, Suneil’s passion for filmmaking remained unwavering. In 2001, he boldly directed and starred in Master, diving deep into the world of martial arts with training in Wing Chun straight from Hong Kong. He also announced an ambitious English-language project titled Vagator Mixer, set against the vibrant backdrop of Goa, though it sadly never reached audiences.

Following the passing of his father in 2011, Suneil took the helm at Navketan Films, cherishing and continuing his father’s cinematic legacy. Among his notable contributions was the presentation of Dev Anand’s timeless classic, Guide, at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.

In the wake of his passing, his niece shared a heartfelt statement: “With heavy hearts, our family mourns the passing of Suneil Anand. The outpouring of love, prayers, and support has brought us comfort, and we are deeply grateful. We respectfully request privacy while we traverse this challenging period together.”
