NotebookLM enhancements facilitate advanced research

Google has upgraded NotebookLM, introducing new capabilities and advanced reasoning features designed to enhance the handling of complex research projects. These improvements, which are available globally for users with Google AI Ultra and certain Workspace business accounts, include a secure cloud computer for running code and generating diverse file formats such as charts, spreadsheets, and slide decks.

The enhancements allow users to embark on projects with only loose ideas. The tool assists in organizing these thoughts by finding and structuring relevant web sources to build a comprehensive research repository. This upgraded functionality positions NotebookLM as a much more intelligent research partner, capable of running code to analyze data and create various document formats.

Originally launched three years ago as an experimental AI tool from Google Labs, NotebookLM has become a preferred choice for millions of individuals and organizations. It helps users organize their thoughts, identify connections across documents, and spark new ideas. The latest updates bring new agentic capabilities in chat and enhanced reasoning powers to tackle the most challenging research tasks.

One of the major upgrades includes running on Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity, providing users with more accurate information and better insight into the AI’s reasoning process. Each notebook now integrates a secure cloud computer, enabling the execution of code for deeper research and analysis. This enhancement comes with over 100 curated software skills to aid in a comprehensive understanding of the sources in your notebook.

In evaluations comparing the new system with the previous one, NotebookLM recorded an average win rate of over 65% across top evaluation dimensions, showing a 15% improvement over prior capabilities. The system excelled in large document analysis and advanced web research, achieving a win rate of 69.9% and 78.2%, respectively.

Users can now request NotebookLM to create outputs in various formats, providing detailed instructions to guide the output. The AI assembles context from sources to produce high-quality outputs like PDF reports, budget spreadsheets, and student worksheets, all downloadable from the studio panel. Moreover, users can edit these outputs after generation, and additional formats are planned for future inclusion.

Starting research has also become easier. Previously, NotebookLM was most effective when users provided their own sources and had a clear project framework. Now, users can begin with basic ideas and questions, with NotebookLM assisting in building a source repository within the chat. This includes finding primary sources in different languages or discovering related works by newly discovered authors. It uses Google Search to find and incorporate relevant, high-quality web sources into your notebook, with all sources clearly attributed for transparency.

The updates are being rolled out globally for web users today, available to all Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Feedback from users is encouraged to continue refining and expanding NotebookLM’s capabilities.
