Apple introduces the most advanced iPad mini yet

Apple has announced the latest version of the iPad mini, featuring a remarkable OLED display, a more compact and lighter design, substantial performance enhancements with the A20 Pro chip, and resistance to both water and dust. The new iPad mini boasts an enlarged 8.5-inch OLED display with a nano-texture option, offering higher contrast and over twice the peak brightness of its predecessor. The A20 Pro chip enhances AI capabilities with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Additionally, the iPad mini includes a 12MP Center Stage front camera positioned on the landscape edge, perfect for video calls, along with an Acoustic Display for improved audio, faster wireless connectivity, and fast-charging support. This makes it the most powerful and versatile iPad mini to date.

The new iPad mini operates on iPadOS 27, utilizing the latest Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. It offers personalized assistance by drawing on user context, answering questions with extensive knowledge, and understanding on-screen content. Pre-orders for the iPad mini and the new Smart Folio begin Wednesday, October 28, and the devices will become available on Friday, November 6.

Dave Pakula, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering, stated, “iPad mini is beloved for its fantastic portability, performance, and display by a wide range of users, from creators and small business owners to doctors, field service workers, and gamers.” He added that the latest model’s thinner and lighter design, stunning OLED display, powerful A20 Pro chip, and resistance features represent a significant advancement for users who prefer a compact iPad experience.

Thinner and Lighter Design

The iPad mini is now just 5.4 mm thick, making it highly portable, and it is available in two finishes: midnight and starlight. This thinner and lighter design enhances ease of use, whether for reading, work, or one-handed operation. Its IP67 rating protects against water and dust, making it suitable for various environments, from working outdoors on a rainy day to reading by the pool.

The device features a larger 8.5-inch OLED display while maintaining the same dimensions as the previous models due to slimmer bezels. The Super Retina XDR display includes OLED technology for superior pixel-level lighting control, deeper blacks, and support for the P3 color gamut.

With peak brightness of 1200 nits, the iPad mini excels in various lighting conditions, supporting 600 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The 1-nit minimum brightness makes it ideal for low-light use, such as reading at night or for pilots using it in the cockpit. The new nano-texture display option, which reduces glare in bright conditions, further enhances its usability for outdoor editing and fieldwork.

Unparalleled Performance and Audio

The A20 Pro chip significantly boosts the iPad mini’s performance, particularly in graphics and AI tasks. Built with Apple’s 2-nanometer process technology and influenced by M-series chips, the chip’s 7-core GPU includes Neural Accelerators for up to 4.5 times faster AI performance than the previous model. This is beneficial for creative applications and local model running, while the updated graphics architecture improves gaming and 3D rendering with up to 2.7 times better graphics performance.

The 512GB model features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, doubling processing power and accelerating tasks in specific apps. The A20 Pro also increases unified memory bandwidth, enhancing the iPad mini’s capabilities for demanding graphics and AI tasks.

An innovative Acoustic Display elevates the iPad mini’s audio experience, providing richer bass and clearer highs through strategically placed woofers and tweeters. The device’s IP67 rating benefits from a sealed enclosure. The 12MP Center Stage front camera, positioned on the landscape edge, is ideal for FaceTime and video conferencing. The 12MP Wide back camera captures high-quality photos and 4K video, with Smart HDR 4 and an Adaptive True Tone flash for improved document scanning.

Connectivity is enhanced with the N1 wireless networking chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread technologies. Cellular models feature the C2 modem for faster data speeds and efficient power use. The new iPadOS 27 enables seamless transitions between cellular and Wi-Fi networks, and users can take advantage of eSIM capabilities for easy plan management.

iPadOS 27 Features

iPad mini users will benefit from Siri AI, launching in beta with iPadOS 27. This new version of Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence, offers personalized and more accurate assistance. Siri AI can make use of personal context to assist users with their messages, emails, photos, and on-screen content, providing relevant actions and answers. Additionally, Apple Intelligence enhances app functionality, allowing for improved photo composition and web monitoring features like Notify Me.

iPadOS 27 includes updates to Liquid Glass, offering users the ability to personalize its clarity, and adds support for extended display mode when connected to an external screen. This is useful for multitasking with multiple windows open.

Parental control tools are available to manage children’s app access and communication, with resources on Apple’s website offering guidance on creating safer digital experiences.

The new Smart Folio accessory introduces a two-panel architecture, providing a lightweight cover that attaches magnetically to the iPad mini. Made with TechWoven fabric in navy blue and taupe, it complements the iPad mini’s finishes and offers adjustable viewing angles for versatility.

The iPad mini supports both Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro, giving users flexible options for creativity and productivity. The Apple Pencil Pro offers advanced features like squeeze and barrel roll, along with Find My support for locating misplaced pencils.

Environmental Considerations

Designed with sustainability in mind, the iPad mini aligns with Apple’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its operations by 2030. It comprises 35 percent recycled content, including components like 100 percent recycled aluminum and cobalt. Manufactured using 40 percent renewable energy, the device is durable, repairable, and meets high energy efficiency standards. Its packaging is entirely fiber-based and recyclable.
