Beta version of encrypted RCS messaging launches today

Today marks the launch of end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging in its beta phase, thanks to a collaborative effort between Apple and Google. This initiative aims to enhance the security and privacy of RCS, which serves as a modern alternative to traditional SMS messaging across different platforms.

The rollout of this feature begins today for users of iPhones running iOS 26.5 with participating carriers, as well as for Android users utilizing the latest version of Google Messages. With the introduction of end-to-end encryption, RCS messages will be shielded from unauthorized reading during their transmission between devices. Users will recognize that their conversations are encrypted by the appearance of a new lock icon within their RCS chats. Encryption will be enabled by default and will gradually apply to both new and existing RCS conversations.

Apple’s iMessage, known for its emphasis on privacy, has consistently featured end-to-end encryption from its inception. It continues to be the preferred method of communication between users of Apple devices.
