Threads relaunches in Türkiye with enhanced features

We are delighted to announce that Threads is once again accessible in Türkiye. Starting today, residents of Türkiye can download the Threads app or visit threads.com to create a new account or reactivate their existing ones, allowing them to restore their past posts, interactions, and followers.

In the last two years, Threads has undergone significant development, and now users in Türkiye can enjoy a more comprehensive experience with features such as real-time Live Chats, Communities, and direct messaging. We are thrilled to introduce these capabilities to users in Türkiye and eagerly anticipate the vibrant discussions ahead.

Background: Temporary Shutdown in 2024

On April 29, Threads in Türkiye was temporarily shut down in response to an interim order by the Turkish Competition Authority (TCA). This decision did not affect other Meta services like Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp in Türkiye, nor did it impact Threads in other countries.

To minimize disruption, all Threads users in Türkiye were informed of this closure via the Threads app prior to the shutdown. Users were given the option to either deactivate or delete their Threads profiles. If a user opted for deactivation, their posts and interactions would become visible again should Threads resume operations in Türkiye. Furthermore, users with deactivated profiles could download their content using the Download Your Information tool.

This temporary shutdown was a result of the TCA’s interim order prohibiting data sharing between Threads and Instagram. Although we disagreed with the order, believing we were compliant with Turkish legal standards, we were compelled to comply. We continued to engage with the TCA and aimed to restore Threads in Türkiye as swiftly as possible.
