Google partners with Voltus on innovative energy capacity solution

Google and Voltus have formed a three-year agreement to introduce up to 100 megawatts (MW) of additional electricity capacity utilizing flexible distributed energy resources in the PJM grid region, which provides service to 67 million people in the United States.

Through this collaboration, Voltus will manage flexible distributed resources, such as batteries and smart thermostats, to decrease energy demand during peak times. In return, local homes and businesses that participate will receive compensation. This initiative not only provides additional capacity to the grid but also directs investment into local communities and enhances the reliability of the grids that power Google’s data centers.

According to research, American consumers stand to save over $100 billion in the next ten years by implementing smart energy solutions like these. By exploring and expanding new strategies for optimized grid usage, from the demand response of data centers to this partnership with Voltus, Google aims to contribute to a more resilient, clean, and cost-effective energy system.
