World Health Assembly Highlights Public Health Achievements and Challenges
The World Health Assembly celebrated six global laureates for their exceptional contributions to public health. These 2026 awards honor their efforts in advancing primary health care, reducing health disparities, and bringing the goal of universal health closer to reality.
The awards ceremony was led by the President of the Assembly, Dr. Víctor Elias Atallah Lajam of the Dominican Republic, along with representatives from the foundations behind these public health accolades, and the World Health Organization’s Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Focus on Ukraine’s Health Crisis
Delegates reviewed a report from the Director-General concerning the humanitarian health efforts in Ukraine and WHO’s ongoing support for the country’s emergency health response. In light of this report, delegates approved a decision to continue the implementation of the existing resolution WHA75.11 on Ukraine’s health emergency, with a progress report expected at the World Health Assembly in 2027.
Integrated Strategies for NCDs and Mental Health
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health issues are the leading causes of illness and premature death worldwide, influenced by social, commercial, and environmental factors. However, many health systems are not adequately equipped to manage multiple health conditions, aging populations, and increasing inequities.
A WHO Strategic Roundtable brought together ministers, policymakers, partners, and individuals with firsthand experience to discuss how health systems can better address these evolving challenges.
- Participants emphasized the importance of moving towards integrated, people-centered health systems that address risk factors, strengthen social connections, and involve communities.
- Emphasis was placed on financing and fiscal policy, including taxation, incentives, and reforms, as crucial tools for addressing risk factors and broader health determinants.
This discussion builds on the 2025 Political Declarations on NCDs and mental health, which renewed global commitments to coordinated, multisectoral action in prevention, treatment, and care.
Always consult a healthcare professional for medical advice related to noncommunicable diseases and mental health conditions.
